So prompt #6 is working so [personal profile] andersenmom and I finally got around to working with it. I have to admit it was a challenge.  I got 718 words written in 20 minutes so I'm happy with that.

Anyway, go here to see the pic that was the prompt.

Maya looked at the painting in front of her.  It had been a long time since she had painted the fantasy worlds she had always loved.  It was a nice change from the death obsessed and dark topics she had been doing lately.  The maze of stairs and houses in front of the landscape she’d seen in a photo still reflected how she and her friends felt, but there was a certain lightness to the topic and the colors she chose that she hadn’t seen in her work in a long time.  She smiled to herself as she reached for another paintbrush to put in some more detail in the center house.  All of the staircases eventually connected to that bright red house.  It was the heart of the painting.

“All roads lead to Rome?”  That voice was more than familiar.  Sometimes she thought she’d be able to recognize it in her sleep.

Maya looked over her shoulder to see Hadrian leaning against the art room’s door.  “Shouldn’t you be in the music room?  Besides, this isn’t Rome.”  She knew he had meant it figuratively, but she couldn’t resist the light barb.

Hadrian wandered over and rested his hands on her shoulders as he took in the painting.  “What’s the meaning behind it?”

“Meaning?  I was just painting” Maya retorted.  It was the truth to an extent.  She had seen a picture with an absolutely gorgeous backdrop and decided to paint it.  The oil painting in front of her was the result of that sudden inspiration.

“Don’t give me that, Maya.  There’s always a meaning behind your work” Hadrian deadpanned.  After all the time they had known each other he knew her as well as she knew herself.

Maya sighed and leaned back against Hadrian’s chest.  “There’s so many roads that we took to get where we are today, but they all lead us to the same place.  We all ended up at home.”  She vaguely indicated the center house knowing Hadrian would get the reference.

Hadrian let a small smile tug at his lips as he lowered his head and placed a kiss on the top of her head.  “Where is home?” he questioned softly.

Maya’s hand came up and rested on the fabric that covered Hadrian’s scarred arm.  “Wherever the eight of us are.  Home is together.”  They weren’t all together at school anymore.  They were moving in different directions, but no one was more than an hour away from the rest.  During breaks they always came back together.  They were still as close as they had been in high school going through all the tragedy that happened their junior year.

“You’re getting deep on me, Maya.  That’s my job, you know.”  Hadrian’s voice held a teasing note to it that Maya hadn’t heard in too long.  Even though they had learned to deal with everything he was still not the same person he had been.

“Maybe, but maybe not.  We all got a little more philosophical after that year.  I’ve felt too lost for too long.  I’m just happy to know where my life is going again, where our lives are going.  Does that make sense?”  She tilted her head back to look up at him.

Hadrian leaned over and placed a light kiss to her lips.  They had started dating shortly after they started at the same fine arts university.  “It makes perfect sense.  I think for the first time since my parents died I finally found someplace to call home.”

Maya smiled and turned her head to the side to press her face into his shoulder.  “I’m glad” she said softly as his arms slipped around her shoulders to hold her tightly.

“Are you planning on finishing it before you leave?”

Maya straightened slightly as she took in the painting.  “I just need to do one more thing before I’m done.  Would you mind waiting for me?”

Hadrian smirked.  “I can wait” he replied as he took a seat not to far away to watch her finish her painting.

When Maya finished she cleaned up quickly and made sure the room was locked before they started for their apartment just off campus.  They had both been lost in a maze for far too long.  It was nice to have someone to go home with.

Oh, very nice. I liked that.

The peace from the painting came out VERY well in this, actually. I thought it was a fitting interpretation. And I like to know that there was happiness afterwards! Great job!

I had to give them a some what happy ending! With all the torture I put them through in the actual fic I had to give them a happy ending. Besides, in the beginning of the actual fic their relationship is starting to change into something romantic.

Thanks for commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed it! ^_^
